Yes, UberEats can be a good job for college students for several reasons:
- Flexible Hours: Students can choose when and how often to work, making it easier to balance classes and study time.
- Extra Income: It provides a way to earn money on the side, which can help with tuition, rent, or other expenses.
- Independence: Working as a delivery driver allows students to work independently without a boss overseeing them constantly.
- Local Knowledge: Students can explore their college town while earning money, learning about local restaurants and neighborhoods.
- Low Barrier to Entry: The requirements to start are generally minimal—often just a car, bike, or scooter and a smartphone.
However, there are some considerations to keep in mind, like fluctuating demand, vehicle maintenance costs, and the potential for long hours. Overall, it can be a viable option if it fits well with a student’s schedule and financial needs.
What is UberEats?
Uber Eats is an online food delivery service by Uber. The company began delivering food in 2014 as Uber Fresh and was changed to Uber Eats in 2015 with its own apps separate from Uber rides. It became popular with foodies and ranked among the top food delivery service providers, such as DoorDash, Grubhub, Instacart, and Postmates.
Customers can order from participating local restaurants, groceries, cafés, and more from the Uber Eats website or mobile app. You can scroll through the menu, add your choices to your cart, place an order, and pay.
The price of items is the same when you order directly from the business, there’s a delivery fee on top of the order.
Expect your order to be delivered within 30 to 50 minutes. Track your order in the app from acceptance and prepping to the time delivery person is on their way to you.

Is working for Uber Eats a viable full-time job? Can you make enough money to support yourself without needing another job?
Working for Uber Eats can definitely be a viable full-time job for some people. The amount of money you can make really depends on a variety of factors such as the demand in your area, how many hours you’re willing to put in, and how efficient you are at delivering orders. Some people are able to support themselves solely through working for Uber Eats, but it may require long hours and flexibility with your schedule. It’s always a good idea to crunch some numbers and see if it’s feasible for you before committing to it full-time.
Yes, you can make a living off Uber eats with the assumptions
- you work for Uber eats full time ( > 40 hours per week). To make a living on Uber eats, you must treat it like a main job. Uber eats is not a supplemental income or a side gig.
- You must be single, not married, and have no children
- You will have very little social life. Going out costs money, and the time available to earn in Uber eats is lost
- Your rent (if applicable) and or your student loans (if applicable) per month cannot exceed your monthly Uber eats income
- Fast food is your best friend. You will lose valuable time and money by going home to eat
- you must be willing to spend the majority of your time in your car, waiting for deliveries
- You must be willing to invest some of your earnings into the repairs and maintenance of your car. You earn money with your car, so logically you must spend money on your car to keep using your car to make money. If you disagree, this gig is not meant for you.
- This ties with # 7. You must be willing to put miles on your car. You must be willing to accept that your car will inevitably lose all value. You must accept that your car is a sacrifice. It will keep going as long as you put money into it, but it’s not going to be worth anything if you attempt to sell it or trade it. In order to make money you have to put a lot of miles on your car. You must accept that ultimately your car is being sacrificed. If you cannot accept # 8, you will not make much money delivering for Uber eats

Conclusion
After being laid off from a retail job because of slow foot traffic, I’ve been on a job hunt. One of my friends recommended I do UberEats since I’m only 19 and can’t do Uber. I do have a monthly bill of $150 to pay and my work hours would probably be from 4:00pm-9:00pm during the weekdays and 8:00am-3:00pm on the weekends. For those who work with are UberEats drivers, do you think this would be doable, and can you also list me some pros and cons? Anything helps.
Yeah, easily.
Most drivers I know tend to work for the 3 main ones in the UK – Uber, Just Eat and Deliveroo (depending on whats available in their area)
Many drivers can turnover £1k a week, but they work a lot of hours to do that, but they also only declare the one which they make the least amount of money on as they’re all classed as self employed and pay as little tax as they can.
Just a case of managing your time, knowing whens best to work and not being afraid to try different towns/cities to find the best areas.
It’s worth noting many people will look down their noses at this sort of job, but they don’t know that it will pay better than the majority of local work.
Thanks!
